The Quiet Side of Shinjuku: Living in Kagurazaka and Yotsuya

Shinjuku's reputation is skyscrapers, neon and the world's busiest station. But the east side of the ward, around Kagurazaka and Yotsuya, is calm, green and residential, while still being 10 to 15 minutes from Tokyo Station. For professionals and couples who want a central address without the noise, it is one of the best-kept secrets in the ward.

If you are browsing Shinjuku apartments for rent and the station area feels too intense, start here.

Kagurazaka: old Tokyo with a French accent

Kagurazaka is built on a hill of stone-paved lanes, small shrines and former geisha houses. Over the years it has also gained a French community, so you will find bakeries, bistros and wine bars next to traditional restaurants. It is often called the "Little Paris" of Tokyo.

Access: the Tokyo Metro Tozai Line at Kagurazaka, the Toei Oedo Line at Ushigome-Kagurazaka, and Iidabashi at the bottom of the hill, served by JR and several subway lines. The Tozai Line runs direct to Otemachi and Nihonbashi, which makes Kagurazaka popular with finance and office workers.

Good for: couples, food lovers and anyone who likes walking home through quiet lanes.

Yotsuya: green, academic and well connected

Yotsuya, on the southeast edge of the ward, is known for schools, parks and wide residential streets. Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden is close by, and the old moat area around Yotsuya and Ichigaya turns pink in cherry blossom season.

Access: JR Chuo Line and Tokyo Metro Marunouchi Line. Tokyo Station is about 10 minutes away, and Shinjuku Station about 6.

Good for: professionals who commute to Marunouchi or Otemachi, families and anyone who wants a slower pace in the center.

What rent looks like

Across Shinjuku ward in 2026, a studio typically costs ¥90,000 to ¥120,000 a month and a 1LDK ¥150,000 to ¥200,000. Kagurazaka and Yotsuya usually sit in the middle to upper part of those ranges because of location and building quality. Things to know before renting here

  1. Hills are real. Kagurazaka's main street climbs steadily. Check the walk from the station with your own feet.
  2. Older buildings are common. Character is part of the charm, but ask about insulation, renovations and soundproofing.
  3. Weekend crowds. Kagurazaka's main street gets busy with diners on weekends. A side street gives you the charm without the foot traffic.
  4. Supply is limited. Good 1LDK units here do not stay listed for long, so prepare your documents before viewing.
