Viewing an Apartment in Meguro: What to Check Before You Say Yes

Photos only tell half the story. A viewing (内見) is your chance to see what the listing does not show: light, noise, smells and the walk from the station. Meguro has its own quirks, from busy main roads to quiet residential slopes. Here is what to check when you view Meguro apartments for rent.

Walk the route from the station

Do not take a taxi to the viewing. Walk from the station and time it yourself. Listings calculate walking time at 80 meters per minute, which does not include hills, traffic lights or crowded platforms. Notice whether the route is well lit and has a supermarket or convenience store along the way.

Listen for road and train noise

Several large roads cross Meguro, including Yamate-dori, Meguro-dori and Kannana-dori. Apartments facing these roads can be noisy and dusty, even with closed windows. Units close to the Toyoko Line tracks can also hear trains from early morning. Ask to open the window for a minute and listen.

Check sunlight and direction

South-facing units (南向き) get the most light and are usually priced higher. In Meguro’s low-rise neighborhoods, a building next door can block light completely. Look out the window and check what stands across from you, and whether anything is planned for empty lots nearby.

Look closely inside

  • Turn on the taps and check water pressure
  • Look for mold around windows and in the bathroom
  • Measure where your bed, desk and washing machine will go
  • Check the number and position of electrical outlets
  • Confirm air conditioning works in every room it is listed for

Ask the right questions

Ask when the building was completed, whether it is wood or concrete, and what the monthly management fee covers. Ask about garbage collection days and where the collection point is. If something looks broken, ask whether it will be fixed before you move in, and get the answer in writing.

Compare with the ward average

It helps to know what fair rent looks like before you decide. Across Meguro-ku, a 1K averages about ¥108,000 a month, based on at home data for November 2026. Our Meguro rent and move-in cost guide shows prices by station and layout.

Start your search

Book two or three viewings on the same day so you can compare. You can browse Meguro apartments for rent by station and price, or look at rental listings in other areas if Meguro does not fit your budget.

A-Realty arranges viewings with English support, so you can ask every question on this list and feel confident about the Meguro apartments for rent you shortlist.
