Moving to Tokyo With Kids? Why Families Look at Yoga and Futako-tamagawa

For families moving to Tokyo, space, parks and a calm street often matter more than nightlife. That is why many expat families end up in the southwest corner of Setagaya, around Yoga and Futako-tamagawa. Both sit on the Tokyu Den-en-toshi Line, about 12 to 18 minutes from Shibuya, but feel far more relaxed than central Tokyo.

If you are comparing Setagaya apartments for rent with a family in mind, here is what this area offers.

Getting to work

The Den-en-toshi Line runs from Futako-tamagawa through Yoga to Shibuya, and many trains continue straight onto the Tokyo Metro Hanzomon Line. That means a direct ride to Otemachi in roughly half an hour. From Yoga, Shinagawa is about 20 minutes away. Futako-tamagawa is also on the Tokyu Oimachi Line, which offers a second route toward the south of the city.

The trade-off: the Den-en-toshi Line is busy at peak hours. Visit on a weekday morning before you decide.

Space for the money

Apartments here tend to be larger and newer than near the big stations. As a 2026 guide for Setagaya:

  • 2LDK: about ¥160,000 to ¥230,000 a month.
  • 3LDK and larger: about ¥200,000 to ¥320,000 or more, with the top end in premium pockets.

For a similar budget closer to the center, you would usually get a smaller unit and less greenery. For a ward-wide view of rent by layout and neighborhood, see this Setagaya rent guide.

Parks and outdoor life

This is where the area really stands out:

  • The Tama River. Futako-tamagawa sits right on the riverbank, with wide grassy areas and cycling paths. Weekends are full of families, joggers and kids on bikes.
  • Kinuta Park. A large park near Yoga with open lawns and space to run around.
  • Komazawa Olympic Park. A short ride away, popular for running, cycling and sports.

Shopping and daily life

Futako-tamagawa has a large shopping and office complex next to the station, with supermarkets, restaurants, a cinema and family-friendly services under one roof. Rakuten's headquarters is also here, so the area has a steady international workforce.

Yoga is quieter and more residential. Daily shopping is easy, and Seisen International School is in the neighborhood, which draws families who want an English-language education.

Tips for families renting here

  1. Start early. Larger units are fewer, and family moves often cluster in spring and late summer. Give yourself two to three months.
  2. Check school routes. Walk the route to school or the nearest bus stop with your children if you can.
  3. Ask about noise rules. Some buildings have quiet hours, which matters with small kids.
  4. Look at the floor. Ground-floor units with a small garden can be great for families, but check for damp and security.
